TONUS : CMRMN / CHAMBRY is the latest delicacy released by Cindys Tapes descending from France. From its inception, it all seemed very ambiguous to me; from the sketches on the album cover to the subtleties in which the songs are composed. Soon my inquisitiveness transformed into an understanding. Cindys Tapes seems less concerned about following traditional hip hop guidelines, for instance, not sampling overworked soul records and more inclined with creating new standards in the realm of production. The end result is a chill, laid back and captivating project. Records that were sampled to create songs like “tshirt, sunset” and “don’t be cruel” are extensions of the song not forthcoming and accommodate the song very well. Often a signature for talented beatsmiths is the ability to reiterate something, make it their own and have it sound exceptional; Cindys Tapes definitely possesses that ability.
One song that particularly stands out for me is “don’t be cruel”. Despite its brevity, which is actually present on most of the songs on this project, the song best exemplifies the characteristics of Cindys Tapes best work. The song is smooth, it possesses a head-nodding element and the Notorious B.I.G. proceeds over the instrumental and lends his vocals from “dead wrong”. In the end, Cindys Tapes dexterity and skill as a beatsmith is something to behold; familiarize yourself with TONUS : CMRMN / CHAMBRY and definitely make sure to support his work.
STANDOUT TRACKS: “jacuzzi”, “tshirt, sunset”, “don’t be cruel”, “mystery of love”, “focus on myself”, “tell me who you are”
